I honestly thought it was an L for LOVE. It was like finding a special message in a bottle 💜
Today, I also see the L could be Link, Longevity & Legacy🔗🍓
Us, to a T
We found L under the ol’ staircase in the shop in 2019
I loved to bum shuffle down the stairs in the 60’s with Phil
Or secretly try to watch 📺 TV late at night, through the holes in the staircase wall
We should have been 🛌 asleep in our room
Theo not even in our dreams then 💤
In the 70’s many local teenagers walked through our little shop at night. Encouraged to eat a piece of fruit , 🍊as they made their way towards Phil’s stairway to heaven 🤘
It ended at our parents tiny ol’ bedroom. Musical equipment, wooden boxes, incense. ashtrays 🎸 Now Theo’s office
Theo breaks the news to me that L is really a set square 🤣 Probs made in wood work at BGS, mid 60’s, by our late big brother Phil.
But I can only see L for LOVE 🥰
I’m trying to find a comfortable spot for L.
Should it be with the vintage scales? Used in a time when our brains were the computers & all shop keepers mathematicians. Even if they lacked a school education
Customers waited patiently in line for their produce to be carefully selected, put in brown paper bags and weighed. We talked about LIFE, we exchanged meaningful smiles. WE still do
As a teenager, and still on on my L plates for serving, Phil told me to always select the best of the best for customers, and not to use it as an opportunity to get rid of something less than. It was the LESSON of all LESSONS
Should L be amongst all the 🇬🇷 Greek products? A nod to our heritage and hard working immigrant parents
Or near the wooden shop counter, or the wood panelling, made with old wood from the Lyric theatre. Old like us
It probably should stay near the wall of photos, with me and Phil 🧍♂️🧍♀️
We will nail it in somewhere soon when we find the right spot
We are the sum of all those that have been before us. Family, friends, customers, community
LONG may they LIVE 🙏🏻 Greengrocers, butchers, fish shops, small biz in Melbourne, Australia 🇦🇺
